Heirloom furniture sounds expensive and fragile, but it can also be fun in the hands of Jeff Cooper. He hand carves heirloom children's chairs in the shape of lions, tigers and bears (and horses and giraffes). Working from a one-man shop in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, Cooper designed and built his first animal chair for his then one-year-old daughter. Each chair is made with solid maple and weighs a mere 16 pounds, or as Jeff says, "light enough for a kid to move around but not so light that they can throw it across the room." The contrasting colors on the chair are achieved with an aniline dye. The finish coat is a catalyzed lacquer.
